Sheri’s Story
I was an Air Force Reservist at Lackland Air Force Base on Title 10 orders to cross-train as security forces. My assailant and several others invited me out to a club. I agreed because we were having BBQs and such for a couple of days, and I figured that as long as I went with a full charge on my phone, money for a cab, and stayed aware, then I’d be fine. Nope.
I woke up in a cab, leaning against the door with my assailant’s hand up my dress. Then, I passed out again. I felt drugged and panicked. Then, I woke up to being raped. Per the Office of Special Investigations (OSI), my rapist admitted to raping me in three different ways. Because he was National Guard on Title 32 orders, there was a clash of jurisdiction. So now I have the FBI checking it out since the federal attorneys won’t touch my case. The Wing Staff Judge Advocate also mentioned in a letter that, because I’m older than my assailant, the rape was not fraternization. My assailant didn’t get anything but a verbal reprimand for drinking while on temporary duty (TDY).
I’m writing to the Secretary of the Air Force, Secretary of Defense, Chief of the National Guard, both of my Senators, and my Congressman. My rape happened in 2014, and I’m diagnosed with PTSD and have nearly killed myself.
