Politico: Military assault overhaul goes to wire

Politico reports:

A yearlong battle to overhaul Pentagon sexual assault policy is headed down to the wire in a last dash of lobbying for the votes of about 10 uncommitted senators.

Both Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Claire McCaskill of Missouri, the two leading Democratic women pushing opposing plans to force the military to clean up its ranks, were spotted Thursday darting around the Senate floor making personal pleas of their colleagues ahead of next week’s expected votes.

At one point, Gillibrand had Republican Sens. John Hoeven of North Dakota and Johnny Isakson of Georgia cornered near their desks, trying to persuade them to at least oppose a filibuster requiring 60 votes on her bill to remove the chain of command from prosecuting sexual assault cases.
