[VIDEO] State Senate bill would require Iowa Guard commanders to report sexual assaults
The Des Moines Register reports:
Iowa National Guard commanders would be required to report incidents of sexual assault involving troops to civilian law enforcement officials under a bill being introduced in the Iowa Senate with support of veterans’ activists.
State Sen. Steve Sodders, D-State Center, said Tuesday he has drafted the legislation in response to concerns that sexual assault can occur while Iowa troops are training, but the incidents aren’t investigated by either civilian or military authorities.
“This should have been done a long time ago,” said Sodders, who is a longtime Marshall County sheriff’s deputy.
